Read MoreIf you wear contact lenses, taking care of them is super important. One of the most common questions people ask is: How should I store my contact lenses overnight? Don’t worry, we focus vision care got you covered!
Here’s a simple guide to help you keep your lenses clean and your eyes healthy.
Before touching your lenses, always wash your hands with soap and water. Dry them with a clean towel. This helps keep dirt and germs away from your eyes.
Never reuse old solutions. Always pour out the used liquid from your case and refill it with a fresh contact lens solution. This helps kill germs and keeps your lenses clean.
Important: Don’t use water to clean or store your lenses. Only use the solution recommended by your eye doctor.
Some lenses need to be rubbed and rinsed before storing. Check your lens solution bottle, some are “no-rub,” but others need a quick clean.
If rubbing is needed:
Put the lens in your palm.
Add a few drops of solution.
Gently rub it with your finger for 10-15 seconds.
Rinse with more solution.
Put each lens in its own side of the contact lens case (right and left). Fill each side with fresh solution until the lenses are fully covered. Close the case tightly.
Tip: Replace your lens case every 1-3 months to avoid bacteria buildup.
Your lenses need to soak for several hours (check the bottle for exact time). This allows the solution to disinfect them fully. By morning, they’ll be clean, comfortable, and ready to wear again.
Follow the wear schedule for your lenses (daily, bi-weekly, monthly).
Don’t sleep in lenses unless your doctor says it’s okay.
Always carry extra solutions when traveling.
See your eye doctor regularly.
The Bottom Line
Taking care of your contact lenses doesn’t have to be hard.
Just remember: wash your hands, use fresh solution, clean and store them properly, and soak them overnight.

Wearing contact lenses should feel easy and comfortable. But if you wear them for too long, it can cause problems.
Contact lenses sit right on your eye. Your eyes need oxygen, and wearing lenses for too long blocks the flow of oxygen. This can make your eyes unhappy.
Dry, itchy eyes – Your eyes may start to feel dry or scratchy.
Red eyes – You might notice your eyes look bloodshot.
Blurry vision – Your sight may not be as clear.
Eye pain or discomfort – It might hurt to keep your eyes open.
Risk of infection – Wearing lenses too long can lead to serious eye infections.
Corneal ulcers – In worst cases, you can get open sores on your eye, which are dangerous and painful.
If you’ve worn your lenses too long:
Take them out right away.
Switch to your glasses for a while.
Use rewetting or lubricating eye drops.
Call your eye doctor if your eyes are red, sore, or blurry.
Only wear lenses for the time your doctor recommends.
Never sleep in them unless your doctor says it’s okay.
Keep a pair of glasses with you.
Set a timer or reminder if you forget to take them out.

Yes, but they’re totally avoidable with good habits!
Why Infections Happen:
Contact lenses sit directly on your eyes, so if they’re not clean or worn properly, they can introduce bacteria. One common infection is keratitis, which can cause redness, pain, blurry vision, and even long-term damage.
Common Mistakes That Lead to Infection:
Sleeping in contacts (unless your doctor says it’s okay)
Touching lenses without washing your hands
Reusing old solution
Wearing lenses too long
Swimming or showering in contacts
Warning Signs to Watch For:
Red, painful eyes
Blurry or hazy vision
Light sensitivity
Watery or sticky discharge
Take your lenses out immediately and call your eye doctor if you notice any of these.
How to Prevent Infection:
Always wash your hands first
Use fresh solution every time
Follow your replacement schedule
Never rinse with tap water
Don’t sleep in them unless approved
Contacts are safe, when used the right way.
