What Are Demodex Mites?

Demodex mites are microscopic organisms that naturally live on human skin. They are commonly found around the face, hair follicles, eyelashes, and eyelids.

They're extremely common, and most people have Demodex mites without experiencing any problems. You can't see them with the naked eye because they are microscopic.

So, simply having Demodex mites doesn't mean that something is wrong with your eyes.

When Do Demodex Mites Become a Problem?

When this happens, you may start noticing symptoms such as:

  • Itchy or burning eyelids

  • Red or irritated eyes

  • Crusty eyelashes, especially in the morning

  • Flaking around the base of the eyelashes

  • Watery or dry eyes

  • A gritty or uncomfortable feeling in the eyes

One sign that eye doctors may look for is collarettes, small flakes or sleeve-like debris that collect around the base of the eyelashes.

Why Is It Important to Have Your Eyes Checked?

Eye irritation doesn't always mean you have Demodex. Similar symptoms can be caused by other types of blepharitis, dry eye, allergies, or other eye conditions.
